When to decorate for spring
I usually start decorating for spring in early to mid-March, or at least by the first day of spring, which this year falls on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.
However, whenever you feel a desire to refresh your home for the new season, I say go for it! Life is too short to live in spaces that don’t bring us joy.
Modern Spring Decor Ideas for 2024
Below, you’ll find some easy spring decor ideas and spring mantels featuring natural elements, interesting textures, and lighter hues for spring, all without a lot of fuss or expense.
1. Use organic, natural elements for a modern spring look
When decorating our home for spring, I always begin by gathering fresh branches and greenery from outdoors. There’s nothing easier — or more beautiful — and it’s one of my favorite tips for decorating for spring on a budget.
Here’s a beautiful space showing how the simple addition of a few spring branches, along with some wood elements, pottery, and framed artwork, can create a modern spring look in the kitchen.
This is the perfect time of year to gather freshly-cut tree and shrub branches and place them in water, allowing them to blossom indoors.
It’s a beautiful and inexpensive way to decorate your home for spring.
Adding fresh flowers to your spaces is one of the easiest ways to decorate your home for spring. I love the idea of adding some flowers to the bathroom!
If fresh flowers aren’t available, green and flowering house plants are a great way to bring the beauty of nature indoors.
Trader Joe’s is my favorite place to find affordable fresh greenery and flowers.
Adding some fresh fruits and vegetables to your kitchen countertops is another great way to bring a touch of spring to the kitchen.
Brandon Architects and Patterson Custom Homes
If you don’t have access to fresh flowers or plants, then faux is the way to go. I’m often amazed at how real artificial plants and flowers can look. Many give off the same fresh vibe as living plants.
Faux plants are the perfect solution for shelves, coffee tables and other wood or marble surfaces, because you don’t have to worry about ruining your surfaces with water.
2. Add some interest with textiles
Next, throw in a few pillows, throws, and layered rugs in lighter spring tones and textures.
One of the easiest ways to bring a fresh look to your couch, chairs, and beds is by adding new pillows — or simply rearranging the pillows you already own.
A new pillow arrangement in our living room is my favorite (and easiest!) way to update our home for springtime.
I love the beautiful mix of pillows in this stylish living room:
Adding layered bedding in neutral tones is a great way to update your bedroom for spring while retaining a feeling of coziness:
If your pillow collection has grown to the point where it’s taking up an embarrassing amount of space in a closet (like mine), you might want to think about buying pillow covers from now on and reusing the inserts from pillows you already own.
Here’s a gorgeous spring bedroom with luxurious bedding and pillows in light hues:
For tips on creating pillow combinations for your sofa and bed, see my post, How to Mix and Match Throw Pillows on a Bed or Sofa.
3. Refresh your styling
Lightening up your home for the new season can be as simple as making little styling tweaks to coffee tables, side tables, console tables, shelves, mantels, and kitchen countertops.
Even the mudroom or laundry room can benefit from a spring refresh, via some fresh or faux flowers in a pretty basket.
A bowl of lemons and/or lush green plant is a beautiful way to refresh your kitchen for spring.
Even something as simple as a new dish towel draped over the sink can add a fresh touch of spring decor to the kitchen. Here’s my favorite source for pretty dish towels.
4. Update your bedding for spring
Spring is all about awakening, so this is the perfect time to freshen up your bedroom for the warmer months with some new spring bedding in lighter tones and textures.
Or, simply refresh your look by switching out your heavy winter blankets, throws, and pillows with lighter-weight and lighter-toned versions.
I love white bedding year-round–but especially in spring and summer, because it makes the bedroom feel calm and cool.
5. Rearrange the furniture
One of the easiest ways to update your home for spring is to rearrange your furniture. Sometimes I forget what a huge difference this simple tweak can make.
Rearranging the furniture only costs a few minutes of time (and maybe a few sore muscles), but it can return dividends in satisfaction, making you fall in love with your home again.
Not only does moving the furniture change the look of your home, it can change the way you use and live in your spaces during the warmer months.

6. Sprinkle in some color
For a fresh spring look, think about adding lush greens, sky blues, sunset pinks, and cloud whites to your spaces.
These nature-inspired hues never fail to bring the vibrancy of the season inside.
When it comes to adding color to your home, you can never go wrong with pairing colors that exist together in nature.
Reminiscent of the sea and sky, blue is the perfect way to bring a fresh spring feeling to your space.
7. Freshen up your shelving and fireplace mantel for spring
If you’re wondering how to decorate shelves or a fireplace mantel for spring, flowers, foliage, leaves or branches picked from your garden or bought from the supermarket are easy ways to breathe life into a spring mantel or open shelving without a lot of fuss.
I love this beautiful beach house style home. Mixing a mirror with smaller artwork and adding a couple of candle sticks and/or greenery creates a curated and interesting look without going overboard.
Sentimental objects, perhaps a favorite piece of artwork or photo from a family vacation, can inject personality and can give new life to your fireplace mantel.
A spring garland, draped on top of or along the front of a mantel (using small Command hooks), is another great way to make your mantel look fresh in an instant.
Spring mantel styling tips
Here are a few styling tips for decorating a mantel — or just about any surface.
- If you don’t have a TV above your fireplace, create a central focal point with a mirror or large piece of artwork.
- Use a stack of books to raise objects off the mantel. If you don’t like the way the book bindings look, turn them around to reveal their lighter-colored pages.
- Combine items in groups of threes–preferably with a tall item, a shorter sculptural item, and a horizontal item.
- Balance hard and soft objects, as well as things with different textures, colors, tones, and styles.
- Layer by placing some things in front of others and some off to the side, to create more depth and give your mantel a natural look.
- Edit — move things around until you achieve the look you’re going for.
8. Update your artwork
One of my favorite spring decor ideas is to switch out artwork for something that reflects the fun, carefree feeling of spring and summer.
Any space can benefit from an instant spring refresh with a new piece of artwork. Here, a large landscape print adds a fresh touch to the entryway:
9. Let in more light
As the hours of sunshine increase each day, this is the perfect time to maximize the amount of light in your home by replacing heavy or dark curtains with white or lighter-colored versions–or removing them altogether!
Another easy way to let in more sunshine is to raise your window shades a bit higher during the day.
In the same vein, think about tweaking your artificial lighting sources, too. Replacing lamps and light fixtures with new ones can give an entirely new look to a room.
We recently added the pendant lights shown in the space below to our kitchen and I love how they instantly transformed our home.

10. Freshen up the patio and porch
The patio is one of my favorite spaces to decorate for spring and summer. I love the fresh feeling of the outdoor space below.
Here’s a look at our covered patio, decorated with plenty of blue and white and an abundance of flowers and plants for spring.
Adding outdoor curtains and a few pillows and decorative pieces makes this area feel like a spring and summer extension of our home.

Adding a wreath to your front door is one of the easiest ways to decorate your front porch and home for spring. It instantly refreshes your home and gives your guests, neighbors, and the Amazon delivery person a reason to smile.
If you’re looking for fresh wreaths to decorate your home for spring and Easter, many nurseries, home improvement stores and grocery stores carry beautiful wreaths this time of year.
Or, you can order amazing fresh and dried natural wreaths online. My post, Spring Wreath Ideas, shares all sorts of beautiful spring wreath ideas for 2024.
